BASTROP AREA LIVESTOCK SHOW UPDATES & NEW OPPORTUNITIES


Hey all!

We are excited to share several upcoming dates and opportunities for the Bastrop Area Livestock Show!  There are a few updates and changes – please be sure to read through the rulebook.  Below are several reminders and updates to help you!

Please let us know if you have any questions and have a great week!

UPCOMING DATES:

  • Next Thursday, September 2nd, 2021, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Bastrop Show Barn will be the first validation/entry night for the following livestock:
    • Market Steers
    • Breeding Heifers
    • Market Broilers
  • If your animal was State Validated, you do not need to physically bring your animal with you
  • Broilers may be ordered ahead of time or at the validation/entry night
  • Families must attend and complete entries and payment for these species

LIVESTOCK SHOW OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Copies of the Carbon Copy Livestock Entry Form may be picked up ahead of time at the County Extension Office and will be available at the Bastrop Show Barn during entry/validation nights
  • Exhibitor Eligibility: All students who plan to participate in the livestock show must enroll by November 1. Exhibitors must be enrolled in the Bastrop Independent School District from the date of animal validation through the date of the show to be eligible to compete in the show and be an active member of the Bastrop or Cedar Creek FFA supervised by an Agricultural Science Instructor, or be an active member of a Bastrop County 4-H club supervised by a Bastrop County Extension Agent during the current school year. Youth attending private or home schools and residing within in the geographic areas of Bastrop ISD must be a member of a Bastrop County 4-H club to be eligible to compete from the date of animal validation through the date of the show to be eligible to compete in the show.
  • Meeting Requirements: 
    • Returning 4-H & FFA Members – must have attended at least 5 of their regularly scheduled 4-H or FFA club meetings (September 1 through May 31) within the current stock show calendar year (from end of last stock show to start of present stock show) and sign the official attendance sheet
    • New 4-H & FFA Members – New members to Bastrop County 4-H or FFA must attend at least 3 of these said meetings and have signed the official attendance sheet
    • If an exhibitor misses a meeting due to a UIL or school sponsored activity, a letter on school letterhead or school email from the coach or school sponsor must be provided to the Ag. Science Teacher or County Extension Agent in order for it to be deemed an excused absence.
  • RABBIT REMINDERS:
    • Youth need to be reaching out to their breeders as soon as possible.  They will need to breed around Thanksgiving time in order to be able to provide rabbits for these show dates.
    • There are TWO (2) Dates that rabbit exhibitors MUST pay attention to and participate in to be able to show:
      • Saturday, December 4, 2021 – Entries are due (carbon copy form (no payment) is due and can either be hand delivered to the show barn OR postmarked by this date)
      • Thursday, February 3, 2022 – Payment is collected and rabbits are physically validated on this evening at the show barn – you MUST have submitted your entry form in order to be able to validate your rabbits

NEW – INVITATIONAL CONTEST OPPORTUNITIES:

  • There are several new contest opportunities that have been opened up to the County!
  • To participate in these invitational contests, exhibitors must be in 3rd-12th grade and enrolled in the Bastrop Independent School District, Elgin Independent School District, McDade Independent School District, or Smithville Independent School District from the date of entry through the date of the show to be eligible to compete. Divisions will be Junior (ages 8- 10), Intermediate (ages 11-13) and Senior (ages 14 & up). Youth attending private or home schools and residing within the geographic areas of Bastrop County must be a member of a Bastrop County 4-H club to be eligible to compete from the date of entry through the date of the show.
  • The following contests are open as invitational contests to the County:
    • Floral Design Contest
    • Youth Western Art Show Contest
    • Baking & Food Preparation Contest
    • Plant Show Contest
    • Agriculture Public Speaking Contest

RULEBOOK, LINKS, & UPDATES:

QUALITY COUNTS REMINDERS – REQUIRED FOR ALL MAJOR SHOWS, BASTROP, & ELGIN SHOWS:

  • All NEW exhibitors and exhibitors who have moved up in age groups (if you moved from 5th to 6th grade or from 8th to 9th grade) will be required to complete Quality Counts training and the test to show at local and major livestock shows. The training is divided into Junior (3-5 grade), Intermediate (6-8 grade), and Senior (9-12 grade) divisions according to the exhibitor’s age.  A Quality Counts number will be required for all youth exhibiting market and/or breeding livestock at major shows in Texas (Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, San Angelo, Rodeo Austin, Sandhills Stock Show, State Fair of Texas and Heart O’ Texas Fair).  All Exhibitors will be required to complete and pass the online test BEFORE submitting show entries to be eligible to show, and will be required to put their verification number on major show entry cards in November. Therefore, you will need to complete the new Quality Counts test before entries are due.  Don’t wait until the last minute, as the training takes approximately two hours to complete.  Exhibitors can access the system, and complete the training/testing, at https://www.texaslivestockvalidation.com/qc/qcregister.aspx.
    All livestock exhibitors will be required to be verified under the system for entry into major livestock shows, and please add your FFA chapter to your registration if you are enrolled in both organizations. Please know, we will provide step-by-step instructions for getting your exhibitors registered and verified online. Call Mellanie or Ashley at the Extension office if you have more questions.

NEW 4-H YEAR ENROLLMENT REMINDERS


Hey all!

We are excited to start a brand new 4-H year for 2021-2022!  The 4-H year will start on September 1st, 2021 and run through August 31st, 2022.  Anyone who would like to show animals, participate in club meetings, or any other 4-H activities will need to enroll (and RE-enroll for the upcoming 4-H year).  We would like everyone to do so as soon as possible so we can get your enrollment approved and get our year started!

Check out some of the reminders below and be sure to forward or share with anyone who is new to 4-H and who has been interested in joining!

REMINDERS:

  • Enroll online in the 4-H Online system at https://tx.4honline.com/
  • All youth who would like to enter a fall livestock show (State Fair, HOT, etc. will need to enroll ASAP so we can request their eligibility checks and excused absences)
  • For those new to 4-H, check out our “How to Join 4-H” one-pager and feel free to reach out to us!
  • You can be BOTH a 4-H and FFA member!!!  The programs compliment each other very well and we highly encourage it!

I wanted to send out a quick reminder that the entry deadline for the Heart O’ Texas (HOT) show is coming up pretty quickly.  Entries are due to the County Extension Office by 12:00 Noon next Thursday, September 2, 2021.  Links to the entries are available towards the bottom of this email.

  • Show entries are due to the Bastrop CEO by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 2nd.

  • The event is expected to be “back to normal”. They have retained a few of the changes from last year and have a few updates:
    • If you are showing SHEEP at HOT, you will need to book your hotel NOW (suggest the Hampton Inn for $139 per night) because the sheep exhibitors will be arriving at the same time a Baylor Homecoming will be taking place
    • They have changed the name of the 2 shows to reflect what they are
      • Junior Livestock Show is now called the Scholarship Show
      • The Jackpot Show is now called the Premium Show
    • The $100 entry fee will enter you (the exhibitor) into both shows – there is not way to just enter one or the other; you will also receive 3 passes per exhibitor that is included with your entry fees.
    • They are adding some scholarship opportunities to be awarded to breed champions and reserve breed champions in the scholarship swine show.
    • Stalling – all animals will be stalled on arrival
    • Shavings – stalls will not be pre-bedded, shavings will be for sale through the Bar None Country Store

    • Scholarship British/Continental Beef Heifers – Brady Ragland

08/16/2021 4-H Livestock Email Blast: Major Lamb, Goat, Heifer & Swine Tags + Major Show Broiler Orders

MAJOR LAMB, GOAT, HEIFER, & SWINE TAG ORDERS
+ MAJOR BROILER ORDERS


Hey all!

It’s time to start ordering validation tags for the 2021-2022 Major Shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, Rodeo Austin, etc.).  As a reminder, all animals that will be shown at the major shows must be state validated.

However, our local shows (Bastrop, Elgin, or Smithville) do NOT require animals to be state validated.  Animals only being shown at the local shows may be validated at their respective show entry & validation nights.

Additionally, All Ordering Details are also posted on our Livestock Show & Validation Page at https://bastrop.agrilife.org/livestock/

VALIDATION DATES:

  • Major Heifer, Lamb, & Goat Validation: Tuesday, October 26, 2021 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot will be required) – we will be using the Bastrop Area Show Barn
  • Major Swine Validation: Tuesday, November 16, 2021 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot will be required) – we will be using the Smithville HS Ag Shop
  • A parent/guardian MUST be present with you, as we need original signatures on all validation forms.
  • These are the final validation dates for this year, therefore if you have a conflict, make arrangements with someone to haul your animal to validation and contact the Extension Office ahead of time regarding paperwork.


MAJOR LAMB/GOAT TAG INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 26, 2021
    • Late Tags: $30 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Breeding Sheep/Goats Reminders:
    • The ownership deadline for registered breeding sheep and goats is October 1st.
      Purchase, delivery, possession, AND registration must all take place on or before October 1, 2021.
    • Their registration papers MUST be in the name of youth(s) and ownership must be on or before October 1st.
    • NEW: All sheep and goats are eligible for family validation.  Registered sheep and goats can family validate if the registration papers have all exhibitors full names listed as owners.  Registration paper ownership will determine the exhibitors eligible to show that project.
    • NEW: Breeding animals validated for State Fair in June do not have to be revalidated for major shows.
  • Other Reminders: All TLBA/TGBA Lambs or Goats that they MUST have their TLBA/TGBA tags in the ears of the goats before they come to validation.  We are not allowed to put those tags in, so you will need to make those arrangements with your breeder ahead of time.


MAJOR HEIFER UIN INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $15 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 26, 2021
    • Late Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • Breeding Heifers: registration papers MUST be in the name of 1 youth and ownership must be on or before November 1st.
    • Youth MUST have their registration papers turned in on or before validation day.


MAJOR SHOW SWINE TAG INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
    • Late Tags: $30 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 29, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • NEW – Breeding Gilts: Registration papers must be uploaded for gilts showing in the San Antonio Junior Purebred Gilt Show and the Houston Junior Purebred Gilt Show; registration papers MUST be in the name of youth and the ownership date must be on or before December 1, 2021.
    • Youth MUST have their registration papers turned in on or before validation day.  It is a best practice to turn them in regardless of what show you *think* you will or will not attend.


MAJOR SHOW BROILER ORDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • All orders due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 1st, 2021
    • Cost: $1.50 per chick, must be ordered in increments of 25
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • The Bastrop Area Livestock Show (BALSFA) uses the Houston/Rodeo Austin major show broiler hatch date for their show – you may order ahead of time with the information in this email, or they can wait to place the order in person at the Bastrop Show Validation and Entry Night on Thursday, September 2nd.

MAJOR LAMB, GOAT, HEIFER, & SWINE TAG ORDERS
+ MAJOR BROILER ORDERS


Hey all!

It’s time to start ordering validation tags for the 2021-2022 Major Shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, Rodeo Austin, etc.).  As a reminder, all animals that will be shown at the major shows must be state validated.

However, our local shows (Bastrop, Elgin, or Smithville) do NOT require animals to be state validated.  Animals only being shown at the local shows may be validated at their respective show entry & validation nights.

Additionally, All Ordering Details are also posted on our Livestock Show & Validation Page at https://bastrop.agrilife.org/livestock/

VALIDATION DATES:

  • Major Heifer, Lamb, & Goat Validation: Tuesday, October 26, 2021 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot will be required) – we will be using the Bastrop Area Show Barn
  • Major Swine Validation: Tuesday, November 16, 2021 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot will be required) – we will be using the Smithville HS Ag Shop
  • A parent/guardian MUST be present with you, as we need original signatures on all validation forms.
  • These are the final validation dates for this year, therefore if you have a conflict, make arrangements with someone to haul your animal to validation and contact the Extension Office ahead of time regarding paperwork.


MAJOR LAMB/GOAT TAG INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 26, 2021
    • Late Tags: $30 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Breeding Sheep/Goats Reminders:
    • The ownership deadline for registered breeding sheep and goats is October 1st.
      Purchase, delivery, possession, AND registration must all take place on or before October 1, 2021.
    • Their registration papers MUST be in the name of youth(s) and ownership must be on or before October 1st.
    • NEW: All sheep and goats are eligible for family validation.  Registered sheep and goats can family validate if the registration papers have all exhibitors full names listed as owners.  Registration paper ownership will determine the exhibitors eligible to show that project.
    • NEW: Breeding animals validated for State Fair in June do not have to be revalidated for major shows.
  • Other Reminders: All TLBA/TGBA Lambs or Goats that they MUST have their TLBA/TGBA tags in the ears of the goats before they come to validation.  We are not allowed to put those tags in, so you will need to make those arrangements with your breeder ahead of time.


MAJOR HEIFER UIN INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $15 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 26, 2021
    • Late Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • Breeding Heifers: registration papers MUST be in the name of 1 youth and ownership must be on or before November 1st.
    • Youth MUST have their registration papers turned in on or before validation day.


MAJOR SHOW SWINE TAG INFO & REMINDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • Early Tags: $20 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021
    • Late Tags: $30 each, due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 29, 2021
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • NEW – Breeding Gilts: Registration papers must be uploaded for gilts showing in the San Antonio Junior Purebred Gilt Show and the Houston Junior Purebred Gilt Show; registration papers MUST be in the name of youth and the ownership date must be on or before December 1, 2021.
    • Youth MUST have their registration papers turned in on or before validation day.  It is a best practice to turn them in regardless of what show you *think* you will or will not attend.


MAJOR SHOW BROILER ORDERS:

  • Deadlines:
    • All orders due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 1st, 2021
    • Cost: $1.50 per chick, must be ordered in increments of 25
  • 2 Options to Purchase Tags:
  • Reminders:
    • The Bastrop Area Livestock Show (BALSFA) uses the Houston/Rodeo Austin major show broiler hatch date for their show – you may order ahead of time with the information in this email, or they can wait to place the order in person at the Bastrop Show Validation and Entry Night on Thursday, September 2nd.

QUALITY COUNTS REMINDERS – REQUIRED FOR ALL MAJOR SHOWS, BASTROP, & ELGIN SHOWS:

  • All NEW exhibitors and exhibitors who have moved up in age groups (if you moved from 5th to 6th grade or from 8th to 9th grade) will be required to complete Quality Counts training and the test to show at local and major livestock shows. 

    The training is divided into Junior (3-5 grade), Intermediate (6-8 grade), and Senior (9-12 grade) divisions according to the exhibitor’s age.  A Quality Counts number will be required for all youth exhibiting market and/or breeding livestock at major shows in Texas (Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, San Angelo, Rodeo Austin, Sandhills Stock Show, State Fair of Texas and Heart O’ Texas Fair).  All Exhibitors will be required to complete and pass the online test BEFORE submitting show entries to be eligible to show, and will be required to put their verification number on major show entry cards in November. 

    Therefore, you will need to complete the new Quality Counts test before entries are due.  Don’t wait until the last minute, as the training takes approximately two hours to complete.  Exhibitors can access the system, and complete the training/testing, at https://www.texaslivestockvalidation.com/qc/qcregister.aspx.
    All livestock exhibitors will be required to be verified under the system for entry into major livestock shows, and please add your FFA chapter to your registration if you are enrolled in both organizations. Please know, we will provide step-by-step instructions for getting your exhibitors registered and verified online. Call Mellanie or Ashley at the Extension office if you have more questions.

HEART O’ TEXAS (HOT) UPDATES – ENTRIES DUE BY 12:00 Noon 09/02/21:

  • Show entries are due to the Bastrop CEO by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 2nd.

  • The event is expected to be “back to normal”. They have retained a few of the changes from last year and have a few updates:
    • If you are showing SHEEP at HOT, you will need to book your hotel NOW (suggest the Hampton Inn for $139 per night) because the sheep exhibitors will be arriving at the same time a Baylor Homecoming will be taking place
    • They have changed the name of the 2 shows to reflect what they are
      • Junior Livestock Show is now called the Scholarship Show
      • The Jackpot Show is now called the Premium Show
    • The $100 entry fee will enter you (the exhibitor) into both shows – there is not way to just enter one or the other; you will also receive 3 passes per exhibitor that is included with your entry fees.
    • They are adding some scholarship opportunities to be awarded to breed champions and reserve breed champions in the scholarship swine show.
    • Stalling – all animals will be stalled on arrival
    • Shavings – stalls will not be pre-bedded, shavings will be for sale through the Bar None Country Store

STATE FAIR OF TEXAS UPDATES – ENTRIES DUE BY 12:00 Noon 08/12/21:

 

  • Show entries are due to the Bastrop CEO by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 12th.

 

  • The event is expected to be “back to normal” with the fair and livestock show taking place at the same time.  They have retained a few of the changes from last year and have a few updates:
    • The livestock show will start 3 days before the fair
    • There are a few dates changes to the contests
    • Contest that require supplemental items will need the supplemental items turned in at the time of entry
    • Public Speaking Contest – the first round will be virtual, final round will be in-person
    • Broilers will be showing on a Tuesday
    • Swine will be divided into 3 waves to help with space and facility use
    • There will be rodeos during the fair on the weekends
